Levels of Hospice Care

Medicare reimburses 4 levels of hospice care. The appropriate level of care will be determined by your nurse case manager in collaboration with the hospice Medical Director and your attending physician.

Routine Hospice Care

The client receives hospice care at their place of residence (i.e: private residence, assisted living facility, or nursing facility). This is the most common level of hospice care.

Respite Care

Respite care allows the client to be admitted to a Medicare-certified skilled nursing facility for up to 5 days, depending on insurance benefits. This allows caregivers to get some much-needed rest and time away from the demands of daily caregiving.

General Inpatient Care

For pain control and symptom management and allows hospice staff to provide clinical services to a degree that cannot typically be provided in the client’s home. The client is admitted to a Medicare-certified skilled nursing facility where short-term intensive care is provided.

Continuous Care

Around-the-clock care in the client’s place of residence. This level of care is provided for brief periods of time when the client is experiencing a crisis. Hospice nurses and aides provide intensive care to manage the crisis situation.
